The International Institute of Forecasters (IIF) is seeking a visionary leader to step into the role of Editor-in-Chief (EiC) for the International Journal of Forecasting (IJF), an official publication of the IIF.

As the premier publication in its field, the IJF bridges the gap between theory and practice, serving as the leading venue for cutting-edge forecasting research across economics, energy, finance, machine learning, climate science, and more. In 2025, the IJF was ranked Q1 in economics and Q1 in management, with a 5-year impact factor of 9. The journal’s profile and reputation places it as the leading venue within the science and practice of forecasting.

We are currently looking for an editor-in-chief (EiC) to provide the International Journal of Forecasting with outstanding leadership. The candidate will have an excellent understanding across the breadth of the forecasting field with an exceptional research-based track record in both theoretical and applied dimensions. The candidate will be committed to the development of the journal as a world-leading publication of the IIF, drawing on their past editorial experience.

About the Role

The EiC job involves four steps: submissions, acceptances, publication, and planning. In addition to these points, the role of the EiC is to set the strategic vision to the journal and to represent the journal, as well as the forecasting community at large, outside his/her area of expertise. This may involve presenting the journal at events, being active on social media, among other activities. The IJF upholds a high level of reviews, and the EiC’s responsibility is to maintain this bar via innovating on the review process and/or via growing the editorial board, considering the increase in the number of submissions.

Essential Criteria:

  1. Established/distinguished Professorial status – or equivalent for applicants from outside academia (e.g. for industry-related or public sector post holders);
  2. Internationally-recognized researcher in forecasting;
  3. Broad knowledge of the forecasting field with demonstrable diversity in terms of methodological advancements and forecasting applications;
  4. Previous editorial experience in academic journals (e.g. as EiC, Senior / Departmental Editorships, Editorship of special issues, Associate Editorship);
  5. Commitment to improve/keep the journal standing while working with the Institute directors.

Desirable criteria:

  1. Previous / current involvement in the IIF and active participation in the International Symposium on Forecasting (ISF), the annual conference of the Institute;
  2. Potential to reach out to other academic communities (e.g. Econometrics, Operational Research, Statistics, etc.)

Office term: 5 years from the appointment date

Start date: January 1, 2027
