Description
The Analytics & Load Forecasting team produces electric and gas forecasts for National Grid. As a Senior Data Scientist, you will develop long-term forecasts for demand-side management (DSM) programs, distributed energy resources (DERs) as well as electrification of heat and transportation at the Company level as well as at zonal and feeder levels. This includes creating long-term outlooks based on various decarbonization policy pathways for adoption, energy and peak impacts of Solar PV, Energy Efficiency, Demand Response, Electric Vehicles, Electric Heat Pumps, and Energy Storage for the Company’s US service territory. You will support the electric and gas load forecasting teams in integrating these load modifiers and along with decarbonization scenarios into the long-term forecasts. You will work with the distributed resources, DSM, strategy teams, and other internal and external stakeholders to ensure that these load modifiers and decarbonization policies and programs are properly modeled and reflect latest information on studies, programs, plans, and policies. Additionally, you will support and respond to information requests from regulatory bodies for rate cases and other proceedings like Electric Grid Modernization Plan, for items related to load forecasting.
Key Accountabilities
- Assemble small and large individual data sets that meet internal business requirements and are within the overall LFA technology platform
- Design and implement ETL processes to collect, transform, and store data from various data sources (databases, APIs, FTPs, SharePoint) using a range of technologies depending upon the use case (Azure, SQL, Python)
- Develop, manage, and maintain the LFA technology platform, which includes cloud computing assets, database architecture, stored procedures and orchestration jobs, and reporting
- Drive the process to automate manual procedures and optimize data delivery for end users and forecasters
- Assist with research, implementation, and delivery of data products that directly support forecast development which meets regulatory requirements such as the Massachusetts Electric Sector Modernization Plan, the New York Climate Plan, and Distributed System Implementation Plan
- Work with stakeholders and forecasters to assist with data-related technical issues and to support their ongoing data and technology needs
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, data science, statistics, informatics, information systems, or another quantitative field. Master’s degree is strongly preferred, with a background in computer science / data science and/or database architecture.
- 3+ years of experience in a data-heavy role
- In-depth experience working with databases (Snowflake, Oracle, SQL Server, PostgreSQL)
- Ability to write code in one or more scripting languages: R, Python
- Cloud computing experience in a Dev Ops environment
- Knowledge of cross-landscape networking (i.e. connectivity between cloud assets and on-prem sources)
- Successful history of manipulating, processing, and extracting value from disconnected datasets
- Excellent communication skills
- GIS programming knowledge or experience strongly preferred
- Fully versed in various OS environments: Windows Server, Linux, Unix/AIX, system task scheduling, Bash programming
- Ability to design and develop solutions that can be leveraged across multiple projects and have scale for the future
- Relevant energy industry experience or experience in a regulated setting preferred
- Highly motivated with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Salary range: Syracuse $116,000 – 136,000, Waltham $130,000 – $153,000, or Hicksville $139,000 – $164,000 a year.
