SAS/IIF Grant to Promote Research on Forecasting
The International Institute of Forecasters Announces SAS® Grants to Support Research on Principles of Forecasting for the year 2008.
For more information, please click here.

This grant was created in 2002 by the IIF, with financial support from the SAS® Institute,
in order to promote research on forecasting principles and practice. The fund provided amounts to
US $10,000 per year, which is divided to support research in the two basic aspects of forecasting:
development of theoretical results and new methods, and practical applications with real-world comparisons.

In the first cycle (2003-2004) three projects were supported by the grant. Since then, only two research
projects per year have received support.

2007-2008
- Grant awarded to Eric Bélanger, Department of Political Science, McGill University; Michael S. Lewis-Beck, Department of Political Science,
University of Iowa; and Richard Nadeau, Department of Political Science, University of Montreal, for their project proposal "Improving Election
Forecasting in the United Kingdom."
- Grant awarded to Gloria González-Rivera, Department of Economics, University of California - Riverside, for her project proposal "Evaluation
of Multidimensional Predictive Densities."
2006-2007
- Grant awarded to Carolina García-Martos, Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, and María Jesús Sánchez and Julio Rodríguez Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, "Unobserved Component Model for Forecasting Electricity Prices and Their Volatilities"
- Grant awarded to Barbara Rossi, Duke University, "New Methods for Forecasting and Model Evaluation"
2005-2006

Manchester Business School, UK, "Automatic Modeling and Forecasting with Neural Networks - A Forecasting
Competition Evaluation"
- Grant awarded to Pilar Poncela, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, and Eva Senra, Universidad de Alcala,
Spain "Combining Forecasts Through Factor Models: Assessing Consensus and Uncertainty"
2004-2005
- Grant awarded to Peter Zhang, Georgia State University, USA, and Douglas M. Kline, University of North Carolina at
Wilmington, USA, "Quarterly Times Series Forecasting"
- Grant awarded to Ting Yu, University of Technology at Sydney, Australia, "Incorporating Prior Domain Knowledge
in Machine Learning"

USA, "Trend Time Series Modeling and Forecasting with Neural Networks"
Travel Awards for the International Symposium on Forecasting (ISF)
The International Institute of Forecasters offers travel award grants to qualified applicants to attend the
annual ISF held each spring by the IIF. The awards are primarily for students and forecasters, regardless of
country of origin. This financial support is intended to supplement other sources of funding and will not
typically cover all expenses. Evidence of financial need will be taken into account as well as support gained
from other sources.
